What defense will work for my 8 man flag football team for 10 & 11 year olds?
We are one of the smaller teams but we have good speed. I'm think 3 dline, 4 linebackers and 1 safety. In a zone system. If we were bigger I would go 4-3-1 but since we are not I will reverse it.
2 CB- Have the corners be played by fast, but not the fasted players on the team. Most QB's in flag usually underthrow it or the ball hangs in the air a while so keeping up with the WR should be no problem. Also I would say close to 70% of plays in flag are run so no need to waste the fastest players there.
2 Line backers (outside linebackers, no middle)- I would put some of your fastest here. Linebackers in flag dont have to be big to hit and most passes, if their athletic, should be able to contain in the middle. So its mostly chasing after sweeps, pulling flags up the middle and some passes. So being in the middle, they are most versatile and can react to pretty much anything they can throw at you.
1 Safety- One of your fastest has to go here. It prevents you getting burned and it helps if anyone catches something over the middle past the linebackers. So yea, defintely work on getting a safety and if he is smart enough, have him roll down the strong sides to blitz or help with coverage or whatever. You could signal him to do this if you want for certain plays.
3 Line- Even though their small, you need a line. Try having at least some of the bigger but slower kids play here if you have any. Just make sure they play on the holes and you should be fine.
This Defense appears pretty unstoppable though you can always move guys up and shift them.
