Why do the Colts get all the officiating calls to go their way?
I heard about it last week with The Texans from an unbiased source, now this week against the Patriots all the calls went the way of the Colts? I know Payton is the darling of the front office of the NFL, but clearly the officials are showing favoritism with him as well. I remember back in 03 when he lost in the playoffs and he called out his front line "if someone would block". You think the front office of the NFL would have picked a better role model to immortalize. I still feel for the Seahawks as well.
The DPI call was a good call because, although the defender was "going for the ball," he was in an inferior position. He made contact before either play touched the ball and the ball was catchable. Had both players been next to each other with an equal shot at getting the ball, there would have been no call. The defender was behind the receiver and tried to get to the ball but contacted the receiver in the process. This is called "playing through the back" and is one of the six types of defensive pass interference. If anyone wants to argue with me on that, fine, but tell me why it's not any of the other five types when you do it.
The spot of the ball was also a good call, IMHO. Forward progress is always a difficult call. It takes most officials years before they understand it. Catching a pass while going back toward your own goal line is the most difficult of them to make, especially when the ball is juggled. The receiver juggled the ball but is still moving toward his own goal line, so he gets none of that yardage. His forward progress is only stopped when the defender gets CONTROL of him, not contacts him. The replay showed the receiver was moving toward his own goal, just crossed back across the 30 yard line, then the defender finally pushed him, causing him to go back farther. The Head Linesman correctly marked progress at that spot.
