Ceiling fan light doesnt work....(its not the bulbs its the pull chain) How to fix?
Our ceiling fan worked great last month. we often run the fan but keep the ligth off till dark, using the pull chain to turn it on and off. Now when the fan is on and the switch is on on the wall...the light wont work. pulling on the chain doesnt result in the familiar click that turns the light on....why doesnt it click on anymore? What can we do to fix it ourselves? any help is great! we miss the light at suppertime!
You can buy a replacement pull chain at most haedware stores.IT IS NOT HARD AT ALL..The switch will only have 2 wires on it.With the power off just take apart and replace..
Before you begin working on your ceiling fan, make sure you turn the power off. If your fan is powered by a wall switch, turning the switch off will suffice, but if it is fed direct, then you will have to find the breaker that controls that circuit.
Step 2With the power off, take a look at the lighting kit on your fan. Notice that there are three screws securing the lighting canopy to the body of the fan. These screws will have to be removed, but first, remove all of the bulbs and glass shades from the lighting assembly. This will help lighten the weight of the lighting assembly when you do remove the screws.
Step 3Remove all three screws and slowly pull the lighting assembly apart from the body of the fan. Locate the pull chain switch that controls the lighting assembly. Use your touch-type voltage tester to ensure that the power is off.
The pull chain for the lights is usually the one located near the bottom of the fan, closer to the actual lights. The pull chain that controls the fan is usually the one located closer to the blades.
Step 4If you have a pull chain dangle, remove it from the chain. Where the pull chain exits the body of the fan you will notice a screw-on cap which has the chain coming out of it. Unscrew and remove the cap. This will release the pull chain switch from the body of the fan.
Step 5 Pull Chain SwitchNotice on the switch that there are two black wires attached. Remove the wire connectors from the two wires attached to the switch and discard the old pull chain switch.
Step 6Take your new pull chain switch and connect one wire from it with one of the black wires that you disconnected from the previous switch. It doesn't matter which one. Then, connect the other switch wire with the other black wire that was connected to the old switch. Secure both pairs of wires with wire connectors and wrap a strip of electrical tape around the connectors where they meet the wire.
Step 7If the new switch has the cap already on it, remove it. Then, insert the chain and the threaded nipple into the hole where the previous switch was installed. Slide the cap over the chain and screw it onto the threaded nipple to hold the pull chain switch in place.
Step 8Gently push all of the wires back into the box and resecure the light assembly using the three screws that were removed earlier. Make sure no wires are hanging out of the box when you secure the light kit to the fan body.
Step 9Reinstall the glass shades, light bulbs and pull chain dangle.
Step 10Turn the power back on to the fan and give the pull chain a tug. Your ceiling fan's light kit should now work!
